The shower pan is where most shower failures start. A bad pan means water behind the tile, mold in the walls, and a full tear-out within a few years. We build shower pans two ways: traditional mud bed with hot-mopped or sheet membrane waterproofing, and bonded foam pan systems like Schluter Kerdi-Shower-Kit. Both methods get a flood test before any tile goes on. We also repair and replace failed shower pans — which means tearing out the existing tile, removing the compromised membrane, and rebuilding from the subfloor up. If your shower is leaking through the ceiling below, the pan is almost always the problem.
